Kenya: Linking Theory to Practice in Airspace Management

On Thursday, 10 September 2026, students and Directing Staff of the Senior Joint Command and Staff Course No. 42 – 2026/2027 stepped beyond the classroom for an educational visit to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA). Led by Colonel Trevor Ogutu, Head of the Teaching Team at the Joint Command and Staff College (JCSC), Karen, the delegation was received by Ms Seline Koech on behalf of the Deputy Director, Air Navigation Services (ANS), together with teams from Meteorology and Engineering Services.

The visit gave the student officers an opportunity to see first-hand how the different ANS functions come together to keep Kenya’s skies safe, orderly and secure. More importantly, it brought classroom discussions on airspace management to life, highlighting its strategic role in safeguarding national sovereignty, supporting economic activity, enabling aviation and strengthening national security.

The engagement also underscored the value of civil-military cooperation in maintaining effective control and awareness of Kenya’s airspace.
